May 17: Mark 16:8

The Ending of Mark

And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

We move to the final passage in Mark, the resurrection of Christ.
Here we will find the controversial ending of Mark: will we follow the servant king?

Some thoughts…

This ending is a “make your own ending.” It is put there for the readers, the reader should know the history of the apostles and of Jesus. They know that Jesus does return to his apostles and restore them. He knows that people have proclaimed that Jesus is risen from the dead but the missing ending of Mark is meant to pose the question to the reader: DO YOU BELIEVE IT? WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT?

The book of Mark has depicted the utter failure of the disciples at every turn, why should the ending be any different? The ending leaves open the gospel: will we pick it up and carry it? Will we be the voice of the gospel to the nations or will we be like the faithless disciples? We have now gone on the same journey as the disciples and in most of our day to day lives we deny Christ through our actions the same as the disciples do, this ending is inviting us to live out what Christ has called the apostles to do.
